Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. The parents of her were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's poorest tenement area. The school she attended after only two years in pursuit of the profession of acting. It was a difficult path to take. Even though she got a job in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. In New York, she worked at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting and moving back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make ends meet by working as an usher throughout the day, and at night performing in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She was a drama student at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
